Are You As Cool As A Dog & The New Blog

I wish I was cooler than the dog that’s been hanging out at my house this week. While I’ve been vicious – at the same time I’ve been as non-responsive as a cat in heat.  Heehee.

As all of you know the PBS show has been postponed until financial obligations can be solidified and the project can get its own legs. Everything happens for a good reason so… until next year. Never trust someone who says, “I have it under control…”

I will be doing a small intimate performance for the patrons and friends of the show on the 30th or 31st.

Needless to say it has been an ass kicker for me and it still is, however, the ship is still at sea and someone has to man up and bring it back to shore.

I can sit here and complain and wax poetic about all the different issues that could have been prevented or what could have been done and what shouldn’t have been done, but then, NOTHING gets done and you must bring food to the table – the hunt is still on.

” If you wanna lay me down you %^&*er! better hit me harder than that… ’cause you don’t want this Taos guy getting back up.”

Bottom line is stay strong – stronger than the demons waiting on the sidelines, they’re only demons after all. Enough about that “$%^&!”

Okay here we go:  Are you cooler than your dog?

If you can roll around in dog poop and still be happy,
If you can live without caffeine,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him or her,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can eat happily what’s put in front of you,
if you can sleep standing,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion, gender preference, or politics,

– Then, and only then have you almost reached the same level of spiritual development as a dog.

This dog is Jamela or Jarmillo or Dummy or Gogeetem, whatever comes out in the moment. It’s not my dog, however I have taken care of it. The only time we get along is when we go on our morning runs. She’s young and strong and I’m middle aged and not as vibrant as I once was. Hahaha. I still kick her butt. I enjoy the company of a dog over a human at times, however, sometimes I wish I could find more humans that were like dogs.

Anyway, this blog has been creepy. I had planned on sharing the news of my new blog/website with all of you to coincide with the PBS show.  But… I’m still excited nonetheless.  My new website and blog is up – hope you’ll check it out and enjoy my new home with me. Put your feet up, grab some conversation tea and enjoy.

P.S. Oh, and if you go to the new blog you’ll see that I’m sharing a never-released free MP3 for you to download.  Just enter your name and email and you’ll get access.

Please stay and don’t lose faith with me, even if I’m covered in poop, I’m still smiling.

Yours faithfully,

  1. Hi my dearest Taos friend. I’m just passing by to visit you at your new home and to say how much I love and admire you. You have no need to feel “S%<&!" I know that you.will get back up and renew your wings very soon… for you are cool.. almost cooler that our beloved dogs <3
You say that this blog has been creepy..;) I think that it is absolutely opposite… It has been so exceptional, both the first and the second part of it..You gave us 15 items in the "cooler than a dog" part.. I can proudly say that I identify myself in at least 11 items.. but I can never, never, never be so cool like my devoted friend, retriever Zen..
Just like you, I enjoy the company of a dog over a human at times.I wish I could find more humans that are like dogs indeed.. Like Creator's creature with no prejudice.. soul fulfilled with unconditional love With much of respect and lot of love, sincerely your friend Lidija (Croatia)

  2. Thank you for sharing this blog with your fans, I just started listening to your music about 2 months ago, thanks to my younger brother Ruben. I must say, your music is a Master-Piece of Art in a world where life is full of depressing moments and the music now in present time is full of mambo-jumbo, but you music is different and very appealing, I love love love it! I admire your story telling music, I imagine myself there in the spur of the moment, it takes me to a different time of my life. My child hood memories and/or experiences have been dormant and untouched, until now.
I enjoy your new blog…keep up the good work n God bless…Tina

  3. You will be even better next year. As you say, all for a reason. And yet, I find change difficult to accept even when I’m the one making it.

  4. We all need to vent now and then this includes you. We as humans have this one quirk called emotions, and sometimes we need to express them, and they don’t always look pretty, but then we can see our downfalls and work on them. I wish I could run with my dog, but my old bones and lungs won’t let me so we just sit in the shade together. I like reading what you have to say as it shows the world and your fans that you to are human. 🙂

  5. thanks for the share, sorry bout the block in the road, hopefully it will soon be knocked down to kids size abc block…..
WHere is the ‘new’ blog, i thought this wasit
    much love

  6. I have been watching Painted Cave and Spirit Dance for years, sharing them over and over as if they were just created yesterday. Sometimes I introduce you through the Monument Valley piece you did . There is no time Robert Mirabal, you and your family and your tribe, your children, brother, cousins, wife … are already connected to the masses and growing everyday. You have no idea at how many lives you touch and inspire.
My friend Lane Badger, who used to own The Four Corners Magazine, and myself have been talking about approaching you, off and on all year to get you to do a concert in Sedona. We now have Highschools in Cottonwood and Sedona that have performing arts centers.
Your music and dance will live forever.

  7. I really hear where you are comiing from……I too, prefer the company of my canine friends and nature to the shallowness of the modern river of techno. life. I live today after a long struggle… alcohol and pain killers became my only relief from the “pains of life”.
In 1979 a native woman introduced me to AA at a place called the Hub of the Plains in Lubbock, Texas. From that day on I never was the same. And so “My Quest” began as I searched for sobriety and peace in this world full off turmoil.
Since then I have had many ups and down as I am sure you have, I even lost my son to cancer in 2008. He was the love of my life and had just become a police officer, and in 13 months,……he was gone. He was only 25. I made a promise to him in his last days as he said to me “Daddy, no matter what happens, you don’t have to drink over this and I am proud of your sobriety.” and he gave me a big hug. He is with me wherever I go, wherever I play my songs, tell my stories and when I sleep…he is always with me. I do not know you personally, but I do know this, you CAN overcome any demons or tribulations in your life if you want to, all you have to do is keep your promise to yourself and to your family and they will always be with you in life and in spirit. Respectfully, Vic I have kept my promise!

  8. Mirabal,

I wish I lived closer to enjoy your intimate show…Creator knows best–the time isn’t right BUT i can feel your pain…Lots of work on your part just to be ‘shot down’!! It stinks for sure…..

    I love the story of Jamela/Jarmillo……You don’t know it’s sex yet??? 😀
I do know that he/she is a very lucky dog and has found a special person who just may have needed him/her in HIS life…Just remember Unconditional Love…..

My best to you and Jamela/Jarmillo

  9. Hi! I have one ticket for the PBS show August 30. Just found out here that it was cancelled. What do I do now? Will there be refunds and/or a show in another venue?

So sorry and best wishes for whatever comes!!

  10. Really sorry to hear about the PBS delay. Don’t you just know that if s**t can happen it will haha. I know you’ll be up for it when it does occur and maybe I can get to Santa Fe by then 🙂 All’s well that ends well…

Now, to celebrate dogs… I’ve never been a fan of dogs particularly… mostly a cat person and I have four furry feline freinds. For my birthday this year my loving hubby bought me a Shih Tzu we named Maggie. How have I ever lived without her. You can’t help but smile when she walks up and laugh at the little tricks she loves to do – roll over, give me 5, say please. Maggie has wiggled her self into my heart and soul and I will never be the same again. Yep, I’m sold… to be a dog is to be happiness, loyalty, friendship, counselor… and Maggie gives back even more that I could ever give. She crept into my dreams this morning just before she woke me up to go potty, but that’s a story for another time. For now, keep smiling and don’t wash off the poop!

  11. Looking forward to seeing you in Durango in November! Had a wonderful time last concert, fun meeting you.

  12. Also can you love unconditionally those that do not always treat you kindly, or with respect.

Hope your show comes through, because of you I have been playing NAF’s and other instruments for the last 7 years and it has opened up a whole new life for me.
I just wanted to say that you continue to play with passion and we can hear it.
Be well and thank you once again.
    Sincerely Ed Brien

  13. progress is never without challenge, so consider it part of the process. i do like the look of the new website. and a saying i’ve heard before, not sure where/who said it, “God help me to be the person my dog thinks I am.”

  14. We’ll wait as long as it takes for your new show. Your fans love you and we are behind you and waiting with you. Blessings and light! All good things come in their own special time.

  15. robert,,,,,,,,,,,,, most of the times i find animals make much better friends than a lot of people!!!!!!!!
    keep up the great work,,
    i love your music!!!!
    a friend

  16. Dear Robert,

I, too, am an artist. Coping with the money / business aspect of our “trade” eludes and mystifies me. It can be so distasteful and destructive to the spirit. The creative aspect, I can handle. Just maintain your focus on your art. Remember….you are brilliantly unique, and when the time is right, your gift will enrich and enlighten. An appreciative audience will be waiting. Be still, and listen.

  17. Wonderful observation.
I am so not cooler than my dog! She is beautiful & peaceful, laughs at everything that frustrates me, sleeps well, plays well, & yes, runs like the wind. However, when I run with her, I am usually tripped as she suddenly drops for a random back roll. 7 yrs & I still have no idea why she loves to do this. Perhaps I should try it sometime. Scare the neighbors.
Prayers for your upcoming performances & for the perfect timing for your PBS show.
    God bless~

  18. Congratulations on your blog it’s awesome…just like you! Take care and hello’s to the family!

  19. Hanhepi waste’ …. Really enjoyed your reflective ramblings or was that reflective humming… about the Coolness of a Dog…. it made me smile in my heart a lot tonight and after working on so many Indigenous Issues all day and so much going on…it was a refreshing drink for my Spirit, and for that Wopila…
I am sure you know the Taos Clothing Designer, Patricia Michael’s, and her family. I love her designs and have followed her story and I know she resides there. I just love her contemporary visions in fabrics.
In closing Wopila ake for the heads up on your new web site. Does your Uncle still make Ocarina’s? Will they also be available with your flutes? Toksha and maybe we will dance by each other in the Dream Lodge. Toksha Nape’

  20. Robert, altho you are facing some rials, I love your sense of humor..Your desciption of being like a dog, Truly IS, the way we should percieve life..Being Grateful, for the moment. Perhaps, your disappointment, is just a path, to a better..Keep faith..Believe..

  21. You know Robert… I’ve been thinking a lot about this week blog…Every day, in my morning walk with my dog, I notice so many aggressive, angry and grinned faces around me.. Just like no one cherish the life.. just like no one care for anything.. And then I take a look at my dog.. All I can see is devotion and happiness.. He notices everything.. every butterfly, every noise in the leaves, every move in the grass.. he almost fly with a breeze in his fur (although he is more than nine years old) and always with a some kind of happy smile on his sweet, beautiful canine face.. Will we ever be able to learn something from those beautiful Creator’s creatures.. or we’ll forever remain like an empty stone.. I’ve just recalled a quote: “When a man moves away from a nature his heart becomes hard!”… Is it an answer for every question?! .

  22. Mirabal,

Your love, your energy, your song is helping me live through a heart wrenching, soul shaping, tramatic time in my life right now. You are helping me walk the right path. I sincerly thank you for your life.

Today, I made the decision to help care for a hell hund. Maybe my new jogging partner. I have to see how she handles on the leash and harness. She even has her own
    She is very loved.

    Blessings of peace.

  23. Love your blog and will be checking out the new website. Don’t ever stop writing! You are very blessed and talented!

  24. When the Universe closes a door, it usually opens a window. Something else — maybe something more interesting — is likely coming your way, my friend.

  25. What if….

this is the very time where creativity is ready to surface?

Opportunity doesn’t always look they way you expect.

  26. Hey,

I am a new comer to your site and your face book page. I was browsing music videos on you tube and some of yours popped up. Love your music! Keep your head up Needs are always provided. I have learned the hard way things happen for a reason though.
These are trying times and they will only make you stronger. Prayers for you and your family. Keep calm and move on you are better than those taking cheap shots at you. It shows you have more class and besides they are just jealous. You are very talented and so I have no doubt something better is already in the making for you. I would like to think I am cool as my dog, but she is a guard dog from hell and notices every little thing and is content dragging her butt across my carpet lol. Have a great week.
